John Chandler Richards

John Chandler Richards, It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our father John Chandler Richards of Sea Pines who died on June 28th, 2018 at the Preston Healthcare Center. John was born on June 11th, 1921 in Madison, Wisconsin. He was the son of Griffith Richards and Marie Chamberlain Richards. He graduated from the University of Utah as a Chemical Engineer and earned an MS degree in Engineering Economics from the Stevens Institute of Technology. He served in the US Navy Amphibious forces in the European, North African and Pacific theaters during World War II. He joined the M.W. Kellogg Company in 1946, serving with the company for over 40 years. In 1954 he moved, with his family, to England where he lived for 21 years, first as a site engineer in the North of England, then Vice President of Sales in London, for Eastern Europe and the Middle East. He transferred to Washington DC in 1975 where he was Vice President, Government Affairs, and, on retirement in 1986, moved to Sea Pines. He was an active golfer, a member of St. Luke’s Church, a member of the Sea Pines Country Club and the Island Seniors. He was an active volunteer in Island and Sea Pines activities, as a Tournament Chairman for the Heritage Golf Tournament at Harbour Town, Chairman of the Sea Pines Architectural Review Board and President of the Club Course Property Owners Association. John was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Margaret (Peggy) Richards (nee Yeates) and is survived by his three children, John Jr., wife Julia of Hilton Head Island, SC; Dick, wife Connie of Arlington, VA; Gay Salim, husband Mohammad, of Boulder CO; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
