WEST COLUMBIA Elsie Heckman Britton, 94, died Sunday, May 4, 2015, at her home in West Columbia, following an illness. Elsie was born January 20, 1921 in Mauch Chunk (now Jim Thorpe), Pennsylvania, to the late Asher and Mary Diehl Heckman, and was the eldest of 12 children. In 1945, she married William "Bill" J. Britton. They moved to a house that Bill built in Forked River, NJ, where they settled to raise a family. Elsie was an accomplished seamstress and was active in her church. She enjoyed reading, cooking, singing in the choir and accompanying Bill to various local music events. Following the death of her husband in 1977, Elsie eventually moved to South Carolina with her daughter's family. She is survived by her daughter, Dianne Britton (Frederick Druseikis); four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six sisters and three brothers. In addition to her parents and husband, Elsie was preceded in death by a brother, a sister, and a grandchild. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 11, 2015 at Providence Presbyterian Church, 1112 Hummingbird Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169. The family will greet friends on Monday from 10-11 AM at the church, prior to the service. Her cremated remains will be buried next to her husband's grave in New Jersey at a later date. Memorials may be made to Providence Presbyterian Church, 1112 Hummingbird Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169 .
