James A. Bone Sr, 80, of Columbia, SC passed away peacefully on Friday evening November 18, 2011 in Lexington Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Born May 20, 1931 in Georgetown, SC, he was the son of the late Robert Dozier and Alberta Marsh Bone. James proudly served his country in the Air Force and received the National Defense Service Medal and Air Force Good Conduct Medal during his time in service. He was the biggest Gamecock fan in the entire state of South Carolina. Baseball always took preference over football but he was a loyal fan regardless. He loved the outdoors and to take the family on monthly camping trips during the summer months. James is most notably known for almost burning down Yellowstone National Park and his famous Grizzly bear encounters. One year he took the family on a cross country camping trip to California and back. James enjoyed golf so much that he took a job as a range monitor just for the perks of the job (free golf). He also enjoyed learning about world history and geography, enjoyed woodworking and was the family handy man always available no matter what the task. He was a Golden Gloves boxer and an avid bowler collecting numerous 300 games and awards. James was a member of the American Legion and Dutch Fork LDS in Irmo. Besides his parents James is predeceased by his loving wife of 53 years Marvodene ?Dini? West who passed away in May of 2008; two sisters Gracie Lee and Alberta ?Bert? and three brothers Robert Thomas ?RT?, Edwin Joseph and Orson Grant. Survivors include his two daughters Jayme Smith-Oliphant (Todd) and Erin Lever (Bud); one son James Bone, Jr (Shay); two sisters Barbara Carroll and Frances Butz; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. James is also survived by his Mother-in- Law and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday morning November 22 at 11 A.M. in the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS, 1330 Whippoorwill Drive West Columbia. Please assemble at church. Visitation which relatives and friends are invited to attend will take place on Monday evening November 21 from 6-8 P.M. at Woodridge Funeral Home 138 Corley Mill Rd, Lexington. Burial with military honors will take place in Woodridge Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in James?s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project. Arrangements have been entrusted to Woodridge Funeral Home.
