Eric Bayles Moore
January 1st, 1935 - June 12th, 2024
Eric Bayles Moore, of Matthews, NC passed gently into eternity on June 12, 2024, to join his Savior and his bride. Eric was born in downstate NY on January 1st, 1935, to Oscar F. Moore and Mary Adair Childress. He graduated from Yale in 1956 where he competed his way to the #1 spot on the Yale tennis team in his senior year. Eric studied chemistry and biology, having planned all his life to go on to medical school. He was accepted to his number 1 choice, Columbia, but after meeting and surrendering to his Savior, Jesus Christ, he felt led in a different direction. Shortly thereafter he met the woman who would capture and hold his heart for 64 years, Margaret (Peggy) Elizabeth Hunter. He said that when he saw her for the first time attending a Bible study he was leading, “she glowed!” They married on November 13th, 1957, and a month later he was drafted. Eric served in the U.S. Army in research due to his background in the sciences. After the Army, the couple began their lives with a dream to own a farm. With very little funds pooled together, they bought 80 acres in Canaan, NH where they welcomed their three daughters and made beautifulmemories. Eric went on to obtain post graduate degrees and spent his career as an educator or Headmaster at college prep schools up and down the East Coast, including a couple of years at Charlotte Latin School. He finished his favorite working years owning and operating a Princeton Review business. Eric loved playing competitive tennis for 50 years until, due to a shoulder problem, he could no longer slam his powerful, overhead, left-handed ace serves over the net. His other passion was performing as a classically trained tenor. His love of song would often be loudly heard throughout the household as he rehearsed. Eric and Peggy both had a love of singing and enjoyed participating in several choral groups together over the years. Eric was asked once if his wife was happy…his smiling answer came back, “Well, she’s always singing in the kitchen”. Their retirement years were spent in the beautiful mountain town of Brevard, NC where they hiked, camped, attended Brevard Music School concerts, and served in the Red Cross among many other pursuits, including serving as elders at their beloved Cornerstone Presbyterian Church. Their recent most senior years were spent enjoying life at Windsor Run Senior Community in Matthews, NC.More valuable than any earthly achievements is the legacy of joy he leaves in his progeny. Eric took great pride in, and will be missed by, his daughters, Becky (Tim) Shreve of Franklin, TN. Ruthie(Steve) Schaffer of St. Charles, IL and Sarah (Rich) Stevens of Matthews, NC, five Grandchildren, Scott (Dayna) Schaffer, Mike (Carrie) Schaffer, Amy (Mark) Erkenswick, Harrison Shreve, Jonathan Shreve and 12 Great Grandchildren: Chloe, Ryan, Clara, Summer, Liam, Autumn, Hannah, Clark, Nora, Esme, Graham and Jasper. And all because a boy fell in love with a girl in 1957.Eric maintained a joyful cheerful spirit until his final breath looking forward to his Master’s everlasting arms.A memorial service/celebration of his life will be determined at a later date.
