At age 16 he spent two summers traveling the country with the Forsythe & Dallas Carnival; then returned to Greeley and graduated from Greeley High School in 1948. John was a competitive roller skater during those years and one night Dorothy VanBeber caught his eye at the Warnoco Skating Rink. Newman; then began a 16 year career with the City of Greeley as superintendent of Linn Grove Cemetery and the Parks Department. He finished his career with the State of Colorado working for C-DOT until his retirement. In his earlier years, John enjoyed refereeing high school wrestling matches and stepped aside when his two sons began wrestling for West High School so he could attend their matches. He was also a 4-H leader for 25 years. An avid outdoorsman, John enjoyed hunting, fishing, rock hunting, lapidary work and camping. He especially enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family. After retirement he and Dorothy enjoyed spending the winter months together in Rockport, TX. John never met a stranger and was always willing to help anyone in need. He will be remembered by his family as a mentor, a teacher, and a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
