Carl A. Swenson
January 26th, 1932 - July 11th, 2016
Carl Almond Swenson, 84, passed away on Monday, July 11, 2016, at Life Care Center nursing facility, Greeley, CO, after struggling with heart and COPD issues over the past two years. Carl was born on January 26, 1932, in McPherson County, KS, to (Albin) Edward Martin Swenson and Ruth Augusta (Palmquist) Swenson. He grew up in Lindsborg and graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from Kansas State University after serving in the Air Force during the Korean War Conflict. On September 26, 1953, he wed the love of his life Virginia "Jinny” Lou (Claycomb) Swenson. Virginia was born April 15, 1932 in Carrollton, MO, to Royal Claycomb and Madeline Myrtle (Merillat) Claycomb also of Lindsborg. They were blessed with four children: Steven Clay of Greeley, CO; David Eric of Garland, TX; Carla Lynn (Swenson) Greenhalgh of Colorado Springs, CO; and John Charles of Littleton, CO. They also had six grandchildren: Christina Lynn (Swenson-Welsby) Parsons, Sarah Marie (Swenson) Dwyer, Michael Edward Swenson, Connor Clay Swenson, Madeline Grace Swenson, and Katelynn Jeania-Marie Greenhalgh. All survive. Carl is the last of seven children and joins Chester Edward Swenson, Orville Conrad Swenson, Ruby Esther (Swenson) Dahlsten, Emma Margaret Francis (Swenson) Berg, Daune Richard Swenson, and Barbara Ruth (Swenson) Wulf in heaven. Carl was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Lindsborg, King of Glory Lutheran Church in Arvada, CO, and most recently Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Greeley, CO. Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 23, 2016, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1800 21st Avenue, Greeley, CO 80632 at 11:00 am with a light lunch to follow. There will also be a memorial service on Sunday, July 31, 2016, at Freemount Lutheran Church (2511 8th Avenue, Lindsborg, KS 67456) at 1:00 pm, followed by a luncheon and burial service at Freemount Cemetery where Carl will join Virginia in eternal rest. Carl was a talented engineer, revered by his peers for his work ethic, honesty, and thoroughness, especially where safety and clean energy were concerned. In addition to his many professional accomplishments, he also volunteered his engineering services for church and other organizations over the years. This included the restoration of Freemont Stone Church, which involved traveling between his home in Greeley and Lindsborg on multiple occasions. He was a gifted athlete who excelled at basketball and tennis, and loved to camp in the Colorado Rockies. He also enjoyed wood-working, building everything from gadgets (saw jigs) to furniture to car trailers to haul things between Denver and Lindsborg. His love of vintage tractors, cars, and trucks was legendary. He was a loyal friend, maintaining childhood friendships to the very end. He was dedicated to his large Swedish family, and a devoted father who will be dearly missed by all. Memorials may be given to "North Colorado Medical Center Foundation” for Cardio Vascular Institute or "Alzheimer’s Association” or "Kansas State University College of Mechanical Engineering” or "Bethany College” of Lindsborg in his honor in care of Adamson Funeral & Cremation, 2000 47th Avenue, Greeley, CO 80634.
