Fentress Scammon Barry
September 30th, 1938 - November 16th, 2016
Fentress Scammon Barry of Glenview, IL, passed away on Wednesday November 16, 2016, at the age of 78. He was born September 30, 1938 in Evanston, IL, to F. Scammon Barry and Louise Fentress Barry. He graduated from the North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka, IL, in 1956, and he received his Bachelor of Arts from Roosevelt University in Chicago, IL, in 1963. He was united in marriage to Patricia Lea Barry on April 10, 1976. Fen, as he was known, worked as a stockbroker and financial advisor building and retaining wealth for his clients across the country for over three decades until his retirement in 1998. Fen was a member of the Larimer County Republican Party. The primary political cause of his life was to reform the byzantine American tax code in order to grow the economy to reduce poverty and increase opportunity for all Americans. Even early on, Fen had a penchant for gardening. Indeed, he holds a patent for The Barry Bench, a workbench be designed with his father specifically for potting plants. He enjoyed tending his robust gardens, which included a varied assortment of roses, specializing in hybrid tea roses. His largest garden held over 50 rose bushes at his home in Deerfield, IL. When he moved to Colorado, he brought his green thumb with him growing roses in Estes Park, Steamboat, Fort Collins, and Windsor. In fact, he created the first rose garden at his final residence at the Good Samaritan Society Water Valley Senior Living Resort. Above all else, Fen was a man who cared deeply about his family, those both near and far. To each, he was endlessly generous with his time and attention. Fen was preceded in death by his parents, Scammon and Louise. Fen is survived by his wife Patricia; his sons Michael Richard Cho and daughter-in-law Cheryl Cho, David James Cho and daughter-in-law Karen Cho, and James Fentress Barry; his grandchildren Trevor Cho, Ryan Cho, Abby Cho, and Brianna Cho; his sister Anne Barry Hudson; his nephews David Hudson and Theodore Hudson; and his many cousins. A private memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 3rd in the chapel at the Good Samaritan Society Water Valley Senior Living Resort located at 805 Compassion Dr., Windsor, CO, 80550. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent in memory of Fen to "Front Range Hospice”, 3770 Puritan Way, Frederick, CO, 80516.
