Jonas Royer Rittenhouse
November 18th, 1929 - June 28th, 2009
Jonas Royer Rittenhouse, 79, of Greeley, CO died Sunday, June 28, 2009 at his daughter’s home in Greeley. He was born on November 18, 1929 in Myerstown, Pennsylvania to David and Myrle Rittenhouse. As a child, Mr. Rittenhouse lived in both Pennsylvania and Maryland. In February 1948 he enlisted in the Maryland National Guard and in January 1949 he began active duty in the Air Force where he spent the next 30 years as a supply manager, stock control officer and base superintendent supply manager. He retired as Chief Master Sergeant and veteran of the Korean and Viet Nam wars. During those years Mr. Rittenhouse was stationed in Japan, Colorado, Texas, Iceland, Libya, Michigan, Viet Nam, Germany, Kansas, Guam and North Carolina. He also served temporary duty in the Philippines, Congo, Thailand, and different Air Force bases in the United States. He received the following military awards; Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Korean and Viet Nam Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and other service awards. In May of 1954 he married Doris G. (Bomar) Herbst. They were married for 54 years. She died September of 2008. After their years in the Air Force they retired in Greeley. He attended University of Northern Colorado where he received his Bachelor Degree in Business Administration in 1984. He then worked for Zeller Oil for 10 years. From 1994 to 2008 he spent time caring for his wife, spending time with his children and grandchildren and taking care of their home. Survivors are daughters, Doris Stillman and husband Rodney of Greeley, Janet Edens and husband Chris of Ashburn, VA ; grandchildren, Michelle Thompson of Omaha, NE, Jason Stillman of Greeley, Steven Stillman of Colorado Springs, CO, Christopher Edens of Charlottesville, VA, Jennifer Lengel of Greeley, Amanda Lourdea of Boiling Springs, PA, Staci Stillman of Greeley, Kathy Edens of Ashburn, VA ; two great grandsons, Seth and Liam Thompson of Omaha, NE; and one great granddaughter, Avery Elizabeth Stillman, who will arrive in August; sisters, Retta Sjorberg of VA, Ruth Hale of MD; brothers, John Rittenhouse of West VA, Paul Rittenhouse of MD, Norman Rittenhouse and Daniel Rittenhouse, both of DE. He is preceded in death by his wife, Doris; his parents; two sons, Richard and Mike E. Herbst; and a brother David Rittenhouse. Visitation will be Sunday, July 5, 2009 from 4:30 �" 6:30 p.m. at Adamson Chapel, 2000 47th Avenue, Greeley. Services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 6, 2009 at Grace Church, 6400 West 20th Street, Greeley. Interment will be at Lakeview Gardens in Wichita, Kansas.
