Herman Walters went to be with his lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at Fairacres Manor. He was born February 25, 1927 in Firestone, CO to Alec and Anna (Weise) Walter, German immigrants from Russia. He grew up on farms in the Firestone and Platteville area. He attended school at Erkenbeck School south of Johnstown until he graduated from the 8th grade. He played softball during his school years. He left school to work on the farm while his brothers were fighting in World War II. He married Virginia Ann Herter February 22, 1948 and they celebrated 72 years together. Herman farmed for 73 years in the Johnstown, Milliken, and Platteville area. He grew sugar beets, pinto beans, corn, Coors barley and alfalfa. In his early years, during the winters he worked at the Great Western Sugar plant in Johnstown. He loved to attend "Dutch Hops.” As he grew older, he became an accomplished welder and built and repaired farm equipment during the winters. He was a hardworking, quiet, kind, humble and generous man who loved his family and will be greatly missed. He retired in 2000 and moved to Greeley. He played the accordion and mouth harp. He loved to garden, especially his tomatoes and cucumbers. He also loved to make "German Sausage”. He was an accomplished woodworker and built many cabinets in their home. Everyone in the family has something in their home from grandpa’s wood shop.
