Tibor ‘ Tim’ Laszlo, 81, of Portland, Oregon, passed peacefully on November 3, 2017 at Powell Valley Assisted Living in Gresham. He was born January 14, 1936 in Szombathely, Hungary, where he and his brother George were child survivors in World War II with his late parents Gyorgy and Marika (Udvardi) Laszlo. Growing up in post-World War II Europe, Tim loved and excelled at sports, specifically, cycling, where he was part of the Hungarian youth national cycling team. In 1956 with the communist uprising, Tim and his brother George, with his wife and two boys, escaped Hungary for a new life in the US, settling in Portland. Tim would find the love of his life, his late wife Kathy, marry on December 10, 1958, and then have his only son Rod, in 1966. They would enjoy the rest of their life in the great northwest along with his brother and the rest of Laszlo family. Mr. Laszlo was in the automotive business for nearly 40 years, starting out as a mechanic with multiple European local dealers, working his way up to Service Manager in two different companies, culminating in being named one of the top service managers in the country in the late 70’s. Tim moved onto sales for 18 years and excelled again, being named a top salesman for a national British luxury brand in the late 90’s. He loved auto racing, driving locally for himself and then as head mechanic for Gary Wright, working in the 24 hours of Daytona was one of his highlights in racing. His love of autos extended across his family and would be the topic of many conversations at many Laszlo get-togethers. Tim and Kathy loved travelling to the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, and other various locations his son, Rod, was stationed at throughout his Army career. He also travelled with his golf buddies to the Southwest US as Tim had a passion for golf and belonged for 37 years to Orchard Hills Country Club, where he had 3 holes in one! As ‘nagypapa’, Tim introduced his grandson Colin to golf at the age of 3 where he would watch him excel in tournaments, recently culminating with Colin playing on his college national championship golf team. Tim also loved soccer where he played with his Hungarian friends, coached his son Rod through middle school and then refereed high school and college for nearly a decade. Mr. Laszlo was a tremendous dog lover too, having dogs in Hungary as a child, then owning 6 dogs throughout his marriage with Kathy. He loved the Pacific Northwest, falling in love with the beauty of the area, although occasionally grumbling about the rain, but believed he lived the American Dream with his family and friends in this beautiful place. Tim is survived by his son Rod, daughter-in-law Pammella, grandson Colin and brother George. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes on November 11, 2017, followed by a reception Gustav's Clackamas. Donations to the Oregon Humane Society and The First Tee are encouraged in lieu of flowers as he loved all pets. An amazing man, Tim will be remembered with great fondness and missed by all who loved and knew him. Service Information
