George Raymond Fischer
August 31st, 1927 - June 18th, 2019
George Raymond Fischer, 91, of Loveland, Colorado passed away on June 18, 2019 of natural causes. George was born August 31, 1927 in Omaha, Nebraska to Frank and Frances (Engl) Fischer…the fourth of five children and a first Generation American. As a boy, he went to Saint Joseph’s School and worked a paper route. While in high school, George worked as a receiving and shipping clerk for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in 1945. George – part of the Greatest Generation – enlisted in the Army as a Private First Class near the end of World War II. While in boot camp at Takoma, Washington, he contracted rheumatic fever, recovered and served in the Philippines as an airplane mechanic during mop-up activities following the war. He was shot in the hip by a Japanese holdout, recovered and was honorably discharged in 1947. Back in Omaha, George opened the Martha Street Tavern as the youngest owner ever to obtain a liquor license in Nebraska. He ran that business for 20 years. He found the love of his life Dolores (Hottovy) Fischer and they married on September 19, 1953. They had three daughters: Valerie, Cherie and Liza. In 1968, George sold the tavern and moved the family to Loveland, Colorado. He obtained his realtor license working at Burge Realty and later earned his broker license and opened FW Realty. He was a member and secretary of the Loveland Realtors Board. Later, he obtained his insurance license and sold both Shelter insurance and real estate. George was also the treasurer of Saint John the Evangelist Church for many years. At the age of 70, George closed his businesses and retired. George loved the outdoors and was an avid bowler, golfer, skier, camper, hunter and fisherman. He was a great reader of western novels and espionage novels. He loved to travel with his wife, Dell to New Mexico and became an ardent collector of Southwest artwork and sculptures. George also traveled the world -- having taken multiple cruises and trips to Alaska, Hawaii, throughout the USA, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, Central and South America. George is survived by his wife, Dolores (Dell) Fischer, his daughters: Valerie (Val) Fischer-Pallansch (Lee Pallansch), Cherie (Zane) Wingard, Liza Fischer (Bob Morris), three grandchildren: Jessica Pallansch, Noah Fischer, Jaime Pallansch and one great-grandson: Kayden Pallansch. He was preceded in death by his father. Frank Fischer; his mother. Frances (Engl) Fischer, two brothers: Franciscan Friar Jeremy Fischer and Joseph Fischer and one sister, Catherine Hall.
