Florence Lillian Haskell Plummer born Easter Sunday April 4, 1920 -June 9, 2023 Florence L. Plummer passed away peacefully on June 9, 2023, with family by her side. She was born in Portland, residing in the area all of her life. Living to be 103 yrs. old, she experienced many events and changes in her world. She graduated from Western Oregon University in Monmouth OR. with a teaching license 1944 and Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education 1947. She taught in a one room school in southern Oregon as well as schools around the greater Portland area. She met Allen Plummer on a blind date while he was in Portland on Army R.R. during World War II. Three years later they were married in 1948. They created a warm and loving home in NE Portland, and they were married 53 years before he passed away. She was an excellent cook and seamstress. Most of her life she had either a dog or cat or a bird. She was very passionate about animals, spoiling them, even giving them one of her favorite foods, Bacon! Florence was an avid volunteer for many causes. During WWll she volunteered in downtown Portland at the “Filter Center” helping to track potential dangers off the Oregon coastline. She was a champion of helping others who were in need and a friend to many. She was very active at Fremont United Methodist Church. From teaching Sunday school to organizing events through the women’s group. She was a Campfire leader for her younger daughter and helped organize a Campfire leader’s Bunco group that continues to meet. She volunteered for many years as a server for the Albertina Kerr restaurant, whose profits help children and adults. She also was active in her local chapter of P.E.O. an organization that helps women of all ages with educational financial assistance. Florence was always curious about the world and enjoyed camping and traveling. As a young woman she became a Mazama, by climbing Mt. Hood. She and Allen and family traveled to many sites in Oregon, Washington, and beyond. They created many wonderful memories together and with their children and grandchildren. There were annual trips to Neahkahnie beach, climbing sand dunes at Pacific City, exploring the High Desert, Steens mountains, just to name a very few. High on the list were the Elk hunting trips in the fall. Florence did not actually hunt but enjoyed the area, gathering huge Sugar Pinecones, admiring the golden Tamarack trees and enjoying the lake. She also enjoyed sitting around the campfire with grandkids and family on the chilly nights. In retirement years she traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Alaska, Niagara Falls by train, Hawaii, England on the QE2 as well as several trips to Canada. She is survived by 2 daughters, 1 son in law and 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grand dogs. We all miss her smile and loving ways. She was a caring mother and grandmother, always helping where she could. We also know that she is in our Father’s hands, at peace. “Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near Still loved, still missed And very dear” Gift in memory may be given to: Oregon Humane Society 1067 NE Columbia Blvd. Portland, OR. 97211 http://www.oregonhumanesociety.org P.E.O.
