John H Williams, Sr.
June 20th, 1927 - August 2nd, 2021
John H. Williams went into the glorious presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, August 2, 2021. Son of Mamie Belle Estridge and Gaston Marshall Williams, John was born June 20, 1927 in Mecklenburg County, graduated from Bain High School in Mint Hill and then served in the U.S. Navy in 1945. John, who had a great sense of humor, was famous for his consistent demonstration of humor, joy and just plain warmth. He was a very active member of First Presbyterian Church, serving as both deacon and elder as well as ministering in the Loaves & Fishes Pantry for over 15 years. He was awarded the Loaves & Fishes Virginia Sampson Award in 1998 for his outstanding work in helping alleviate hunger in Mecklenburg County. He also served as president of the Chapel Bible Sunday School Class. Both John and his wife Lib were strongly influential in the life at First Presbyterian Church where they especially enjoyed welcoming new members into the fellowship of believers as a tower of inspiration and Christian witness to so many. The abundance of his working career was spent with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1989 after 37 years. He was instrumental in encouraging the growth of the Charlotte Postal Credit Union from the 1960's through the 1980's, and served for a number of years on the Board of Directors. Staying active in retirement he enjoyed working for Harry & Bryant, Tallent and McEwen Funeral Services, meeting new people and making new friends. John is survived by his daughter Susan Williams Schultze and husband, Michael Frederick Schultze, son John Haywood Williams, Jr, and wife, Yarby Query Williams, son Benjamin Richard Williams and wife, Cheryl Hart Williams; brother Clement D. Williams & wife Colleen Watson Williams, sister Eltie Williams Harkey & husband Robert Harkey, eight grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. The service will also be livestreamed at https://www.firstpres-charlotte.org/funerals/.
