Tribute & Tallent Funeral and Cremations
Edna Friedman Bernanke
February 21st, 1931 - September 2nd, 2018
Edna Friedman Bernanke, 87, died Sunday, September 2, 2018, at the Carriage Club in Charlotte. She had been a resident of the Clare Bridge Memory Care Center for three years. She leaves behind three children, Ben (Anna), Seth (Ellen) and Sharon (Paul) and grandchildren Joel, Alyssa, Mariah and Karinne. Her husband of 60 years, Philip, died in 2012. Edna was born February 21, 1931, in Norwich, Connecticut. Her father was a Hebrew School teacher there during her early years. When she became a teenager, the family moved to Charlotte, where she graduated from Central High. She then attended and graduated from UNC Greensboro (then called Women's College) in 1952 and taught school for a year before giving birth to son Ben in 1953. Soon after, Edna and Phil moved to Dillon, South Carolina, where Phil began working with his father Jonas and his brother Mort at Jay Bee Drug Store. Despite the logistical difficulties, Edna kept a kosher home for all those years in Dillon, hosting rabbinical students each year from the New York seminary for the High Holidays. Edna was primarily a homemaker, but she regularly did book-keeping for the drug store. After over forty years in Dillon, they sold the store and retired to Charlotte, where they were active members of Temple Israel. The family would like to thank the excellent and compassionate care givers at the Clare Bridge. Donations may be made to Temple Israel in Charlotte. A service in celebration of her life will be held at 3:30 P.M. Monday, September 3, 2018 in the Chapel of the Hebrew Cemetery, 1801 Statesville Avenue, Charlotte with Rabbi Murray Ezring officiating. Interment will follow in the Hebrew Cemetery.
