Mary Lee Harris Polk

Mary Lee Polk of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 28, 2016. She was born in Crisp County, GA, the daughter of Jarvis "Barney" Harris and Mary Owens Harris. Her brothers were WT Harris, George Harris, Cecil Harris, Pete Harris, Kye Harris, all predeceased her, and Bob Harris. Her sisters were Evelyn Teagle, Elizabeth Harris, Sarah Titshaw, Benita Reed, all predeceased her, and Joyce Roth-Scott. She was married to Herlie Lee Johnson, Sr. (1946-1958) and Clarence B Polk (1959-1998). Mary Lee had one son, Herlie Lee Johnson Jr. (Kathy), but was step-mother to Patricia P. Starnes (Don). She had two grandchildren: Melissa Johnson Lingerfelt and Jennifer Johnson Tuttle-Deaton (Jon), four step-grandchildren: Dane Petrea, Darryl Petrea, Gina Petrea Smith and Stacie Starnes, three great-grandchildren: Amanda Lingerfelt, Eric Lingerfelt and Taylor Tuttle-Deaton, eleven step-great grandchildren and nine step-great-great-grandchildren. Mary was a long time member of University City UMC in Charlotte, NC. She spent most of her working career as an executive secretary, retiring in the 1980's. She was an accomplished poet, an avid reader, but her main interest in life was her large family, both immediate and extended. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. with visitation an hour before the service at J.B. Tallent Funeral Service, 1937 Sharon Amity Road, Charlotte, NC . Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park.
