Joseph Lamar Mays

Dr. Joseph Lamar Mays, surrounded by his loving family in prayer, entered into eternal rest on Jan. 31 in Charlotte, N.C. He was 94. Dr. Mays was born in Jackson, Ga., a son of the late John Billy Mays and Martha Strickland Mays. He was a graduate of Emory Medical School and practiced ophthalmology in Atlanta after serving in the U.S. Navy. He later joined the U.S. Air Force and retired after serving in the Philippines, Germany, England and Arizona. He is survived by Dympna Walshe Mays, his beloved wife of 66 years; five children including Daragh (Helmuth) Janssen, Niall Mays, Kieran (Barbara) Mays, Brian (Sharon) Mays, and Deirdre Mays; his sister, Martha Read; 10 grandchildren including: Carmel Lisser, Christiaan Janssen, Brendan Janssen, Moyra Sandel, Mairenn Janssen, Patrick Mays, Hilary Mays, Lauren Mays Watkins, and Lily and Erin Mays; and his five great grandchildren.
