Jerry Avon Sharpe
March 22nd, 1948 - June 25th, 2023
Mr. Jerry Avon Sharpe, 75, of Harmony, passed away June 25, 2023 at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville. The Celebration of Life service will be held at Winthrop Friends Meeting in Harmony on July 1, 2023 at 11:00 AM. Jerry was born March 22, 1948, in Iredell County, to the late Noel Dent Sharpe and Margaret Ruth Johnson Sharpe. Jerry was a graduate of Union Grove High School, and was an active member of the Union Grove chapter of the FFA. On July 14, 1973, Jerry married Freda Johnson of North Wilkesboro, and was married for 48 years before Freda passed in 2021. Besides working with his father on the family farm, Jerry worked at Burlington Industries in Statesville until the plant closed. He also worked as a carpenter with Mayberry Building and Northwest Building Companies, and on the assembly lines at Freightliner and Accuma before retiring. Jerry loved spending time with his family and friends and had a great passion for the outdoors, especially fishing. Jerry was also a veteran of the United States Army actively serving from March 8, 1968 to December 22, 1970 reaching the rank of SP5 upon his Honorable Discharge on March 1, 1974. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers J.D. Sharpe, William Thomas Sharpe and James Noel Sharpe; one sister, Irene Sharpe Coleman; and one nephew, Jeffery Scott Coleman. Jerry is survived by his daughter, Pamela Stallings and husband, Todd of Kinston; two sons, Thomas Sharpe and husband Gary of Statesville and John Sharpe and wife Amanda, of Statesville; four grandchildren, Emma, Joshua, Chad, and Caroline; five sisters, Polly Sharpe, Esther Milan, Ramona Roberts and husband Carl, all of Harmony, Joy Baugus and husband Wendell, of Hamptonville, Sharon Davis and husband Maxie, of Statesville; one brother, Dennis Sharpe and wife, Lesa, of Union Grove; brother-in-law Roger Coleman; sister-in-law Carolyn Waters Sharpe; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 11796 Charlotte, NC 28220; or Gordon Hospice House, 2347 Simonton Rd., Statesville, NC 28625.
