Tribute & Tallent Funeral and Cremations
Ed Jackson Davis
March 19th, 1933 - October 16th, 2013
Jack Davis March 19th, 1933 - October 16th, 2013 Ed Jackson Davis, 80, of Charlotte, NC died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, October 16th, 2013. He was predeceased by his parents, Jim Lyman Davis and Ruth Jackson Davis, brother Jim Lyman Davis, Jr. and his first wife, Billie Gene Clifton Davis. Jack was born and grew up in Memphis, TN and graduated from Central High School. His formal education in textile technology included studies at Memphis State College, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Queens College. Jack and Billie Gene moved to Charlotte in 1958. Jack's 58-year career in textiles began in Memphis. His business acumen and strong work ethic were the foundations upon which he built a successful profession, including work at Devant Yarn Sales, Highland Yarn Mills, Glen Raven Mills and eventually his own business, Davis Yarn Sales. He and Billie Gene together raised three devoted daughters until her passing in 1977. He married Barbara Collier in 1984. They enjoyed life at their home on Lake Wylie, where their yard became a virtual bird sanctuary. Jack was a people person. His stories and laughter were always a pleasure to be around. He was a southern gentleman-always concerned about others more than himself-even during his illness. Jack was the man you wanted beside you in both good times and bad. Those lucky enough to have been embraced in the warmth of his presence will never forget his generosity, contagious laughter and positive attitude. He was affectionately known by some as "Sheriff Jack" after a fateful 1966 evening had him defending his daughter's boyfriend's automobile from pranksters wielding nothing but his boxer shorts and an unloaded pistol. Jack is survived by his dedicated wife, Barbara; his daughters, Vicki Sloan (Henry), Cindy Bailey (Mike), and Kathy Withrow (Andy), all of Charlotte; his stepdaughter Shawn Wilson and stepson Charles Griffith II (Christina); his brother William P. Davis; his grandchildren: Michael and Brooks Bailey, Elizabeth Nicholson (Ryan), Meredith Cook (Sterling), Emma Sloan, Madison Sargent (David), Carley West (Chase), Megan Mullen and six great grandchildren. The entire family would like to thank the incredible, passionate staff at Novant Health Hospice and Palliative Care, especially Carol, Yolanda, John, Gena, Sharon, Heather, Sean and Ashley. A very special thank you is given to Jack and Barbara's dear friends and neighbors, "Deputy" Nick and Maryann Loughlin, for their unfailing love and support. A memorial service will be officiated by John Samb on Monday, October 20, 2013, at 11:00 AM at JB Tallent Funeral Home (1937 N Sharon Amity Rd. Charlotte, NC 28205). The family will receive friends after the service. A private burial will be held Monday. In lieu of flowers, you may make a contribution to Novant Health Hospice and Palliative Care (P.O. Box 33549 Charlotte, NC 28233). 10/21/2013 11:00 AM Memorial J.B. Tallent Chapel 1937 N Sharon Amity Rd. Charlotte NC 28205
