Doris Louise Spencer
January 4th, 1923 - May 29th, 2015
In the sovereign will and grace of God, Doris Louise Scalf Spencer (92) went to her heavenly home on May 29, 2015. Mrs. Spencer was born to the late Rev. John H. and Mary Cameron Scalf, Sr. in Durham, NC on January 4, 1923. As a child she was inspired by missionaries visiting her home and determined to prepare for the mission field. In preparation she was educated at Salem College (NC) and Wheaton College (IL), where she received a B.A. in 1944 and later in 1951 a Master of Religious Education from Central Baptist Seminary (KS). In 1944-45 she taught high school Bible and English in Mt. Airy, NC and at Wheaton College Academy in 1946-47. At Wheaton College she met her late husband Alvin "Bud" Spencer who also felt lead to the mission field. They married on March 31, 1945 in Winston Salem, NC and were appointed as missionaries with the International Mission Board, formerly the Foreign Mission Board, SBC in 1952 and sailed to Yokohama, Japan. They faithfully served in mainland Japan and on the island of Okinawa, working side by side to plant both Japanese and English language churches. After retiring to Charlotte in 1985 she enjoyed helping her children, spending time with her grandchildren, working outdoors in her yard and building a mountain retreat in Mitchell County, NC for the family. Since shortly after her husband"s death in 2008, Mrs. Spencer lived with her daughter, Susan Tuttle at her home in Charlotte, where she passed away. Mrs. Spencer is survived by her children Susan S. Tuttle of Charlotte, NC; Joel Spencer of Nashville, TN: Sharon S. Munz of Richmond, VA; Stephen Spencer(Joan) of Alexandria, VA; Samuel Spencer(Kimie) of Richmond, VA; and Jonathan Spencer(Sarah) of Decatur, GA., and preceded in death by one infant son, Scott Cameron Spencer, 1958. She is survived by fourteen grandchildren, Christopher Tuttle, Megan Tuttle, Timothy Spencer, Tracy Gray, Charryse Kritz, Elizabeth Johnson, Richard Munz, Jonathan Munz, Stephanie Joyce, Elizabeth Spencer, Naomi Spencer, Cameron Spencer, Lily Spencer, and Caleb Spencer, eighteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Robert Scalf of Bath, NC and Donald Scalf (Joanne) of Rocky Mount, NC, and preceded in death by her brother John Scalf, Jr. of Wilmington, NC. The funeral service will be held in the chapel at Providence Baptist Church, 4951 Randolph Rd, Charlotte, NC, on Saturday, June 6 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:30 p.m. Graveside committal will follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
