Richard Kim Ellis
May 12th, 1953 - October 12th, 2023
Richard Kim Ellis (Kim), 70, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully at home on October 12, 2023,after a short battle with ALS.Kim was born on May 12, 1953 in Decatur, Illinois to Gene and Marcia Ellis. Kim spent hisyounger years in Cincinnati before moving to Charlotte at age 12. Kim graduated from SouthMecklenburg High School in 1971, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1976.He was an avid Tar Heel fan and loved the Cincinnati Reds.After graduating from UNC, Kim enjoyed a year living in Key West where he developed hislove for tennis, Jimmy Buffet, and the Keys. He obtained his scuba diving certification whileliving there. Upon return to Charlotte, he began his successful long-term career in the insurance/financial planning industry working with the Teague Group for 35 + years.In 1978, Kim met the love of his life, Anna. They were married in 1981 and had two children,Kim Jr. and Kasey. Kim’s life focused around the love for his family. He was devoted to hisbeloved and beautiful wife, and they enjoyed a storybook marriage for 42 years. He was adevoted loving father, and he adored his grandchildren who affectionately called him Pop.In addition to his family, Kim had a passion for tennis and loved teaching others, including hischildren who went on to play NCAA Division 1 tennis. After semi-retiring, he obtained hisProfessional Tennis Registry Certification where he taught children, high school students andadults. Kim was a long-time active member of SouthPark Church where he served in many rolesand was a Stephen’s Minister. He was selfless and giving and radiated love and kindness toeveryone he met. He truly ministered to many friends and family members throughout his life.Kim is survived by his wife, Anna; children Kim Ellis Jr. (McKenzie), Kasey Chmelik (J); andgrandchildren Liza Ellis, Drew Ellis, Caroline Chmelik and Carter Chmelik. Kim is also survivedby his siblings Van Ellis, Steve Ellis, Chris Ellis, and Gail Wherry. He was preceded in death byhis parents, Gene and Marcia Ellis, and granddaughter, Emma Ellis.A celebration of life service for Kim will be held on Thursday October 19, 2023 at 1 pm atSouthPark Church, 3151 Apex Drive, Suite 100, Charlotte, NC, 28211 with visitation followingthe service.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SouthPark Church or a charity ofchoice.
