Scanlan, John Francis, 100, life-long resident of St. Paul and North St. Paul. Predeceased by his wife, Anna Catherine Capaul Scanlan; son, Dennis Francis Scanlan; and great-grandson Connor Scanlan. Survived by his children Patricia Gromak of Omaha, NE; Mike (Kris) Scanlan of Fincastle, VA; Kathleen Bambach of No. St. Paul; Margaret (Jerry) Bushong of Oro Valley, AZ; Rosi (Rob) Beachy of Charlottesville, VA; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 4 great-greatgrandchildren. John was born at home in 1916 to Jeremiah Scanlon and Theresa Fitzmaurice Scanlon, both immigrants from Ireland. A graduate of North High, John was a proud WWII Naval veteran, serving in the Pacific aboard the USS Coos Bay and USS Boxer as a Gunners Mate 1st Class. He was well known for his paid and volunteer work with the Albert Lea, No. St. Paul and Oakdale Fire Departments, serving as Captain and trainer of many firefighters. John was a US Postal Employee for over 25 years, sorting mail on the train from Chicago to St. Paul before air mail was introduced, and carried local mail routes in North St. Paul. After retiring from the Post Office in 1977, he spent 18 years reading meters for the city of North St. Paul. John was a life-long member of St. Peter’s Church; and well known in the North St. Paul community due to his volunteer efforts with the Oakdale Volunteer Fire Department and the North St. Paul Lion’s Club. Mass of Christian Burial Thursday (7/28) 11:00 AM at CHURCH OF ST. PETER, 2600 N. Margaret St., North St. Paul. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials requested to Oakdale Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Chief Jeff Anderson, 5000 Hadley Avenue No, Oakdale, MN 55128, to benefit the training department or Health Partners Hospice.
