Jack Marino, 85, of Hall Avenue in Johnstown, passed away on December 28, 2014 after a brief illness. He was born Giacchino Guiseppe Marino on August 24, 1929, to Maria Sciacca and Pietro Marino (Mary and Pete). His parents emigrated to the United States from Marsala, Sicily, in 1926 during the second wave of Italian migration. Jack was born at home on Forest Street in Gloversville, and was raised on Monroe Street, where his parents made their permanent home. Both of his parents were glove makers. As the son of immigrants, Jack spoke a Sicilian dialect at home, and learned English when he began his formal education at Oakland Avenue Elementary School. Jack was an honor student at Estee Junior High School and then Gloversville High School, graduating in 1947. He graduated from Albany Business College in 1949. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. During one furlough, he attended a dance sponsored by the National Catholic Community Service in Manhattan where he met his future wife, Noreen Grace Marino, who survives. They were married in The Church of Saint Athanasius in the Bronx on November 20, 1954, and recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. Jack began working at the Fulton County National Bank and Trust Company in 1949, starting as a teller and working his way up to vice president before retiring in 1988. He also worked as a bookkeeper and assessor. His hobbies included handyman projects, gardening, hunting, camping, and fishing. He is survived by his five children and their spouses, Noreen and Neal Collins of Clifton Park; Patricia and Ron Robinson of Johnstown; Peter Marino and Aaron Broadwell of Saratoga Springs; Thomas Marino and Diana Lee of Manhattan; and Andrew Marino and Megan Allen of Delanson. Jack is also survived by his grandchildren, including his youngest and namesake, Jack Marino, of Delanson; Daniel Robinson and his wife, Michelle Ciotti-Robinson, of Liverpool; Ellen Robinson of Zurich, Switzerland; CA; Alyssa Valente of Scranton, PA; Matt Valente of Pittsburgh, PA; Sean Valente of Clifton Park; Brett Valente of Clifton Park; Julianna Lee-Marino of Manhattan and step-granddaughter Roni Robinson of Venice Beach. Jack was pre-deceased by his youngest granddaughter, Monica Grace Allen, and his step-grandson, Cory Collins. He is also survived by many other relatives in Marsala, including cousins Ignazzio Parinello, Vincenzia Scalia, and Nino, Giuseppe and Anna Sciacca. Jack's children would like to express their gratitude to the nursing and support staff of St. Peter's Hospital and St. Peter's Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Albany, and to Drs. Heckman and Keim. They would also like to thank Dr. George Weis of Amsterdam Family Practice. Finally, they want to acknowledge the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice, including Sarah Grainer, Robin Jusenius, and Sue Ettington, and Jack's home health aide, Judy Heiser, for enabling him to spend his final days at home. Friends are invited to call at Walrath and Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville, from 5-6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31. A memorial service celebrating Jack's life will immediately follow at 6 p.m. It was Jack's request that any donations in his honor be made in memory of his granddaughter, Monica, to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. Contributions can be made at http://www.phassociation.org/ or at PHA, 801 Roeder Road, Ste. 1000, Silver Spring, MD 20910. Please visit the online family guestbook at www.brbsfuneral.com.
