On December 3, 2014, Anthony "Sonny" Guiffre passed away peacefully at home with his wife and son at his side. He was 86 years young and loved comparing his age against anyone in the room. Sonny was a lifelong resident of Gloversville. He was born on October 21, 1928, the only son of 6 siblings, born to Thomas and Eunice DiMarco Guiffre. He was predeceased by sisters, Jennie Guiffre, Anna Guiffre and Delores DiGiacomo. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis Tartaglia Guiffre, son Thomas Guiffre (Marlene), and granddaughter Katie Menz (Joseph). He is survived by his sisters, Madeline Calella, Francis (Sooky) Keenan, brother-in-law Frank DiGiacomo, sister-in-law MaryAnn Rouke (Frank), brother-in-law John Tartaglia (Carol) and many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins. Sonny attended Gloversville schools as a youngster and proudly earned his GED later in life. He served his country along with his good friend John Tartaglia, in the US Air Force, and finished his term of service as a staff sergeant. He was an excellent athlete and a superb dancer. Sonny was hired by Decca Records Manufacturing Plant (MCA/Universal) and retired as a tape room supervisor after 40 years of service in 1993. He was a communicant of the Church of the Holy Spirit, where he served as an usher and member of the Holy Name Society. He also was a long term trustee of the Catholic War Veterans, and a Gloversville Little League Coach for many years. Sonny was a lifelong Yankees fan just like his dad, and he enjoyed visiting with his daily coffee group at the Sr. Center to talk baseball and the local news. He will be remembered for his devotion to his family, which always came first to him, his love of children, his respect for people and his quiet strength of character. Sonny was a remarkable husband, father, grandfather (papa), brother and friend. His smile, laugh and witticisms will be sorely missed, but they will never be forgotten. The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, December 5th at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville . A prayer service will be conducted 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Church of the Holy Spirit. The Very Rev. Don Czelusniak will be the celebrant. Interment will take place at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown, in the spring. Memorial Contributions may be made to The Church of the Holy Spirit, 151 S. Main St; Gloversville, or to the Gloversville Senior Citizens Center, 53 Church St; Gloversville.
