Donald "Don" Brown
July 17th, 1921 - November 30th, 2014
Donald "Don" Brown, 93, formerly of Northampton Rd., Amsterdam, passed away Sunday November 30, 2014 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam following a brief illness. Born in Amsterdam, NY on July 17, 1921 the son of the late Albert and Ruth McCullough Brown. Don was a self-employed salesman and was the owner and operator of several successful businesses in the area. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II serving in Asiatic/Pacific Theatre. Mr. Brown was a salesman for over 15 years at the former Dangler Appliance Store in Amsterdam. He then was the owner and operator of the former Browns Record and Gift store in Amsterdam for 18 years. He also worked as a wholesale salesman for his business the former B and B Clean Up Co. covering the greater Capital District area. He worked at it for 20 years retiring in the 1980s. Don was a kind and gentle man and gave so much to his community. Mr. Brown was a member of the John J. Wyszomirski Post #701 in Amsterdam. He was a member and Past Post Commander of the VFW Bergen Post #39 in Amsterdam. He was a volunteer for the Red Cross and was Chaplain and a member of the Fort Johnson Seniors and Iroquois Seniors. He was an altar server for many years at the former St. Michael the Archangel Church and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Amsterdam. He also was a Eucharistic Minister serving communicants in various hospitals and nursing homes. He was married to Antonetta "Toni" Schietromo Brown on January 17, 1943 and were together for over 69 years. Antonetta passed away on October 22, 2012. Survivors include his daughter-in-law, Sherri Brown of Amsterdam. Brothers-in-Law, Anthony Schietromo of Glenville, NY and Alfonso Schietromo of CT. His grandchildren, Sandy and Steve Moore, Darcey and Ryan Hewson, Chad and Mary Brown, Kerri and Armstead Barker, Betsy and Mike Malpass, and Kyle Brown. Great-grandchildren, Travis, Kelsey, Austin, Madilynn, Bailey, Alexandra, Rylee, Payton and Lincoln, Larkin and Jacoby. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Mr. Brown was predeceased by his beloved son on September 16, 1987, Donald L. Brown Funeral services will be held on Monday December 15, 2014 at 10:15A.M. at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:15A.M. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church, 39 St. John St., Amsterdam, with Father Pascal "Pat" Iannotti presiding. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Full Military Honors will be renedered following the Mass at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 39 St. John St., Amsterdam, NY 12010.
