Melvin C. Coons

Mr. Melvin C. Coons Jr., 85, of Gloversville, passed away October 24, 2014 following a brief illness. Mr. Coons was born March 21, 1929 in Sharon, N.Y., son of the late Melvin C. and Ina King Coons Sr. Educated in Rockwood schools, Melvin had been a leather worker most of his life, lastly employed as a splitting machine operator at Townsend Leather in Johnstown. A devoted sportsman, Melvin loved the New York Yankees and was a life- long hunting and fishing enthusiast. Perhaps his true passion was golf. Playing at Holland Meadows, Melvin accomplished two holes in one. An achievement most golfers can only dream of. He will be sadly missed. Survivors include his wife Dorothy Hohenforst Coons of Gloversville whom he married January 8, 1947, several nieces and nephews. Melvin was predeceased by his siblings; Evelyn Slater, Vivian Starr, Beatrice Coons, Everett Coons, Eugene Coons and Lester Coons. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no calling hours or services. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St. Gloversville.
