Bob Fetterly
May 18th, 1951 - January 4th, 2014
Bob Fetterly, 62, of Valley View Rd., Amsterdam, passed away peacefully January 4, 2014 at his home with his loving family at his side. Born in Amsterdam, NY on May 18, 1951 a son of Hugh and Mildred Dreaney Fetterly. Born Douglas Franklin Fetterly, later nicknamed "Bob". Bob was raised in Amsterdam and was a 1969 graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School. He then went on to receive his B.S. from SUNY Brockport in 1973 and later his M.P.A. from Syracuse University in 1975. Bob began working at 6 to help support his family, working various jobs from selling TV guides, paperboy, and being a caddy at Antlers Country Club. After college he was employed at the Social Security Administration in Rochester for three years before moving back to Amsterdam. Capping off his career as a public servant Bob worked as an auditor for the New York State Comptrollers Office in Albany, NY until retiring due to illness in August of 2011. During his career he held numerous jobs ranging from Director of CDA, Director of Urban Development, Director of a water bed factory, sold Century 21 real estate, Director of P.I.C., Housing Coordinator of Equal Rights in Housing, Director of Transportation in Amsterdam, New York State Comptrollers office, bartender, and Lay Presbyterian Preacher. Bob dedicated his life to giving back to not only his family but to the community. Serving as Director/President on more than 9 boards. In 2012 Bob was given the Key to the City of Amsterdam and recognized as Rotaries "Man of the Year", capping off a long career of service to his community. Other community service roles he filled were; basketball coach for the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, President of the Inter Church Basketball League, CYO league basketball coach, youth league t-ball coach, youth league softball coach, director of the Montgomery County Heart Association, Mohawk Valley Economic Development District board of directors, Rotary club member and president, Irish American Club member and president, president of the GASD school board, board member and president of Liberty Enterprises, Liberty Foundation board member, Chairman of the Montgomery County Industrial Development Agency, member of the Waterfront board, NYS ARC Board of Governors, YMCA board of directors, Festival of Trees committee, Amsterdam beautification committee, Loan Committee for the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, Parent Teacher Association member and president for Lynch Middle and Amsterdam High Schools, Wrestling booster club president, and member of the AYSC soccer booster club. Survivors include his loving wife Darlene A. McNamee Fetterly whom he married on June 24, 1972, they were married for 41+ years and renewed their vows after 25 years of blessed marriage. Three sons, James Douglas "JD" Fetterly of Atlanta, GA, Adam Franklin Kelly Fetterly of Ft. Johnson, NY and Robert Daniel David Fetterly of Albany, NY. One daughter, Erica Jill Fetterly-Collins of Bergen, NY. Three brothers, Hugh Fetterly of Mesa, Arizona, Richard Alan Fetterly of Harrisburg, PA, James Kevin Fetterly of San Clemente, CA. Three sisters, Donna Jean Warren of Ft. Johnson, NY, Bonnie Jo Sullivan of Johnstown, NY and Eloise Elizabeth Fetterly of Ft. Plain, NY. Cherished grandson, Evan Douglas Collins. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Bob was predeceased by his loving parents and older brother David Lee Fetterly. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at 7:00 pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends that evening from 4:00 to 7:00 pm prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Bob's memory to the Liberty Foundation, PO Box 515, Amsterdam, NY 12010 or to Community Hospice of Amsterdam, 246 Mannys Corners Road, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
