Helen M. Firkins
January 2nd, 1927 - December 15th, 2013
Helen Mabie Firkins of Saddle River, New Jersey, formerly of Scarsdale New York, died on December 15th at the age of 86. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Bruce J. Firkins; sons, Bruce W. and wife, Diane of Allendale, N.J. and Bradford M. and wife, Terry of Manlius, N.Y., four grandchildren, Andrew, Katie, Bill and Mee Rae and great grandson, Cole. Born in Amsterdam, New York to Dr. William A. and Katharine T. Mabie, Helen graduated from Amsterdam High School in 1945 and Skidmore College in 1950 with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. She was predeceased by her brother, William J. Mabie. A resident of Scarsdale for over 55 years, Helen was an active member of the Greenville Community Church, the Scarsdale Woman's Club and the Edgemont School District PTA. She worked as a sales associate for Neiman Marcus and was a long-time election inspector for the Town of Greenburgh. Her volunteer work included participation and support to Children's Village of Dobbs Ferry, Meals on Wheels of White Plains, Skidmore College, the Greenburgh Nature Center and the New York Botanical Garden. Helen and her husband, Bruce, traveled to many parts of the world, enjoyed New York City and the theater, the love and joy of their grandchildren and great grandson and the company of their many friends. A service celebrating Helen's life will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave. Amsterdam, NY 12010. Memorial donations may be made to the United Presbyterian Church of Amsterdam.
