Evelyn Evie M. O'Brien

Amsterdam, NY- Evelyn Evie M. O'Brien, 77, of Second Avenue, passed away peacefully on Friday at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany with her loving family at her bedside. Born August 6, 1936, in Amsterdam, New York, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Julia Mazurkiewitz Coalter. Evelyn attended and graduated local schools and lived most of her life in the Perth and Amsterdam area. Evelyn was employed at the Sacandaga Boat Club for 33 years up until August of this year and considered the members her second family. She was also a Licensed Real Estate Broker for Mohawk Valley Real Estate in Amsterdam for a number of years. Evelyn was a lifelong member of the St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Amsterdam and an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Sacandaga Boat Club. Evelyn's passions were her family, cooking, reading and traveling with her daughter Kathy. She was also an avid NY Yankees baseball fan. Survivors include: three sons, Leonard J. Butch Serafin Jr. of Amsterdam. David A. Serafin Sabrina of Amsterdam and Samuel R. Serafin Gina of Johnstown; two daughters, Linda A. Guess Dwight of Pattersonville and Kathleen Serafin-Atlas Bruce of Franklin, MA; one brother, Robert Coalter Robin of Meco; one sister, Elizabeth Savoie of Perth; 17 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at 1:00 pm at the St. Ann's Episcopal Church, 37 Division Street, Amsterdam with the Fr. Neal Longe officiating. In accordance with Evelyn's wishes, there will be no calling hours. Cremation will take place at the Vale Cemetery Crematorium in Schenectady. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Evelyn's memory to the Amsterdam Community Cancer Program for the Capital District Cancer Research Fund, 1710 Riverfront Center, Amsterdam, NY 12010, to whom the family expresses special thanks for their excellent care and support; or to the Community Hospice of Amsterdam, 246 Manny's Corners Road, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
