Mr. Herbert E. Pierce, 82, of Gloversville, passed away December 21, 2012. He was born December 2, 1930 in Gloversville, son of the late Nelson and Irene Pierce. Mr. Pierce was educated in the former Berkshire schools and was self-employed in the family business, Herb Pierce Roofing & Building, until his retirement. Herb had also served in the National Guard in his earlier years. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing his entire life. He was previously a devoted member of the Pleasant Square Fire Department, and the Mayfield School Board of Education. In addition to the roofing & building business, Herb also owned and operated the Mr. Softee ice cream and restaurant in Mayfield in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Mr. Pierce is survived by his loving wife Jennie Gentile Pierce of Gloversville whom he married June 21, 1953. Herb leaves five children: Karen Thomas Mark of Gloversville, Jolynn Pierce of Mayfield, Jeanette Manning Ron of Norfolk, MA., Edward Pierce Sharon of Gloversville and Mark Pierce of Amsterdam. Herb is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Amanda Rose, Kristen Willis, Jamie Pierce, Lindsay Philipps, Jeremy Pierce, Megan Thomas, Zachary Pierce, Ciara Holden, Kendall Manning, Cole Manning, Emma Pierce and seven great grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 am Thursday, December 27, 2012 at The Church of The Holy Spirit, 149 S. Main St. Gloversville. There will be no calling hours.
