Lois E. Spelman

Lois Elizabeth Bowers Spelman passed away on October 19th, 2012, at The Nathan Littauer Hospital Extended Care Facility. She was a native and life-long resident of Gloversville. Lois was the daughter of Elizabeth M. Geweye and Herbert L. Bowers and the step-daughter of Minnie Ulrich Bowers. She was pre-deceased by all of her siblings, Marian, Everett and Roland. She was also predeceased by her beloved husband of almost 50 years, William Howard Spelman, who passed away in 1990. Lois is survived by two children, William Howard Spelman and his wife Cynthia Woolbright, of Webster, New York and Alice Lynne Wentworth and her husband, Merle, of Fryeburg, Maine. Lois is also survived by her ten grandchildren as well as her seven great-grandchildren. She was a graduate of Gloversville High School Class of 1934 and Faxton School of Nursing, Utica, NY. She was extremely active in her community. Lois was New York State President and local member of the Parent Teacher Association and a Past Matron and active member of the Caydautta Chapter of the Eastern Star. She was one of the founders of The Lions Club Women's Auxiliary and spent many hours with her husband, Bill, a life- long member, enjoying their activities. Additional community activities included work with the YMCA and the YWCA. Throughout her adult years, she enjoyed working on her class reunions. Lois loved music and played the organ and piano throughout her life. She was an avid entertainer and enjoyed playing for many community celebrations and played for the residents of the facility where she was living. A private graveside service will take place at the convenience of the family at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville, with the Rev. Bonnie Orth officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to Nathan Littauer Hospital Extended Care Facility, 99 East State St. Gloversville, New York or to Harvest Hills Animal Shelter, Route 302, Fryeburg, Maine 04037, in her name.
