Mr. Lauren T. Barnett, 87 years old, of Golf Course Road, died peacefully this morning, August 29, 2012, at his home. Mr. Barnett was born March 4, 1925 in Amsterdam, the son of H. Walton and Ethel Hess Barnett. He was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School, Class of 1943. Mr. Barnett enlisted in the US Army in June of 1943, was wounded in Germany in December of 1944 and discharged in December of 1945. He then went to St. Lawrence University graduating with a B.A. degree in 1950. Mr. Barnett accepted a position with Glens Falls Insurance Co. in 1950. In 1957 he formed and operated the Barnett Agency, Inc. in Amsterdam which remains in his family today. Mr. Barnett was an Elder and Trustee of the United Presbyterian Church, Past President & Director of: Meals for the Elderly, Amsterdam YMCA, Amsterdam Chamber of Commerce, Insurance Underwriters, Amsterdam Board of Realtors, Amsterdam Shrine Club, United Way of Montgomery Co., and the Fairview Cemetery Association. He was a member of the Amsterdam Rotary Club, Welcome Lodge No. 829 F & AM, Oriental Temple in Troy, Secretary and Director of Amsterdam Parking Authority and Past President, director & Chairman of the Board of Amsterdam Savings Bank, Mohawk Community Bank and AMBANK Holding Co., Inc. On January 27, 1951 he married the former Marget Wallace of Syracuse who survives. Also surviving are four sons: Steven W. Nelsa Barnett of Amsterdam, Jeffrey S. Linda Barnett of El Dorado Hills, CA, Brian R. Barnett of McLean, Va and Douglas A. Robin Barnett of El Dorado Hills, CA.; his sister Marjorie Walters of Baltimore, MD; his grandchildren: Kyle Barnett, Andrea Dewhurst, Adrienne Barnett, Clair Barnett-Nisbet, Nick Barnett, Chloe Barnett and Scott Barnett; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 10:00am Saturday, September 1, 2012, at United Presbyterian Church, 25 Church Street, with The Rev. Roland "Mac" McDonald Officiating. The family will receive friends following the funeral service at the church. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to: Shriners Children's Hospital, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 02114 or United Presbyterian Church, 25 Church Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
