Winifred Margaret Baker
February 7th, 1918 - March 9th, 2012
Miss Winifred Margaret Baker, 94 of Gloversville, passed away March 9, 2012 at Nathan Littauer Hospital. She was born February 7, 1918 in Albany, N.Y., daughter of the late Michael and Goldie Smith Baker. Miss Baker moved to Gloversville with her family in 1918 where she attended school and graduated Gloversville High School in 1936, Gloversville Business School in 1937 and Albany Training School for Practical Nurses in 1939. Winnie worked as a practical nurse at Nathan Littauer Hospital eight years in the 1960's, Secretary to the Director at Nathan Littauer Hospital for four years, an office nurse for Dr. Brickner for twelve years, a practical nurse at Johnstown Hospital, private duty nursing, Matron-Nurse at Willing Helpers Home for Women, and an office nurse for Dr. Sin until her retirement in 1982. Winnie loved music and was an accomplished violinist. She played for many years with the Albany Light Opera and later with the Johnstown Golden Aires Band. She was also a member of the senior citizens in Gloversville and Johnstown, the Foothills United Methodist Church and the Johnstown Historical Society. She volunteered as a nurse and violinist at the Wells House, Johnstown YMCA and the Senior Citizens Adult Care Center and Library. Winnie enjoyed crafts, listening to music, sewing and crocheting. She also wrote poetry and participated in many contests where she won awards for her entries. She leaves nieces, Barbara Blackburn of Williamsville, N.Y. and Donna Gray of Amsterdam. She is also survived by a brother-in-law Donald Thompson of Gloversville, grandnieces and nephews and great grandnieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by a brother Second Lieutenant Douglas H. Baker, a US Air Force Pilot reported missing in action November 29, 1943 during W W II, and her dear sisters; Dorothy Breeding, Muriel Thompson and Eleanor Walker. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Monday March 12, 2012 at Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St. Gloversville. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1-3 pm. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to Foothills United Methodist Church, 17 Fremont St. Gloversville.
