Richard W. Sears
June 17th, 1929 - April 13th, 2011
Richard W. Sears, 81, of Broadalbin, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born June 17, 1929 in Brooklyn, the son of the late Harold and Emily Snyder Sears. Richard served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1956 until 1960. He worked as an air traffic controller and pilot. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Medal and the Good Conduct Medal for his brave service. He was employed at Model Dairy in Riceville, NY. Richard was an extremely hard working man, sometimes working two jobs to support his family. Very intelligent, he was an amazing teacher to his children. He taught them not only knowledge that can be learned in books but life lessons that shape a person's character, such as honesty, generosity and integrity. He was an avid and talented gardener. His garden was always big and beautiful and would keep his family and the neighbors fed through the winter. More than anything else, Richard enjoyed being with his family, especially his granddaughters. Survivors include his beloved wife, MaryLou Heron Sears of Broadalbin, with whom he shared over sixty two years; two daughters: Jennifer Strait Gregory of Gloversville and Jacinda Sears of Schodack Landing, NY and two granddaughters: Marissa Strait and Gabrielle Strait; four stepchildren: Salvatore Orefice Sue of Florida, Billy Orefice Robinof Syracuse, Patricia Calabrese Jamesand Christopher Calabrese Stephanie and eight step grandchildren: Tracy Orefice, Missy Orefice, Nicholas Orefice, Crystal Calabrese, Arlene Calabrese, Anthony Calabrese, Joanne Calabrese and Joey Calabrese. A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m. at Broadalbin Mayfield Rural Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements have been entrusted to Jeffords & Stewart Funeral Home, 85 West Main Street, Broadalbin, NY 12025.
