Bernice A. Greco, 88, of the Stratton Apartments, Division Street, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday evening at her home. Born April 1, 1922 in Amsterdam, NY she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Sophie Majcher Tarnowski. She was a life long Amsterdam resident and attended local schools. Bernice was employed as a sewing machine operator for Chalmers Knitting Mills in Amsterdam and she also helped her husband run Tony's Bait Shop on West Main Street years ago. She was a parishioner of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam. Bernice was married to Anthony J. Greco who passed away on September 25, 1961. She was also predeceased by her sister Helen Wszolek who passed away in 2008. Survivors include her brother Frank Tarnowski of Amsterdam; a niece Joan Phillis Donald of Amsterdam and a great niece, Tracie Tessitore James of Johnstown. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 27, 2010, at 10:00 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 am at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Amsterdam, with Fr. Brian List as celebrant. Burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Johnson. A calling hour will be held on Saturday from 9:00 to 10:00 am at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Bernice's memory to St. Mary's Church Memorial fund, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
