Janet K. Spencer, 74, of Brand Road, Sprakers, NY died peacefully Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown following a long illness. Born in Gloversville, NY on May 29, 1935 she was the daughter of the late Rosco and Ruth Ann Baird Krom. A lifelong area dairy farmer, Janet was raised in Gloversville attending city schools. She owned her own farm in Gloversville, before moving to a dairy farm in the Town of Charleston. She was an avid card player and enjoyed the Concordia Club in Gloversville. She was also a member of the Pitch league at the Dixie Grill. Above all she loved her family and spending time with them. On January 4th, 1963 she was united in marriage to William J. Spencer, Sr. That union lasted 26 years until his passing on August 7, 1989. She was also predeceased by her brother William Krom, a daughter Ruth Ann Alerding and a grandson, Kurtis William Glasser. Her loving family includes her children, William J. Spencer, Jr. and his fiancé Candace France of Sprakers, NY, his twin sister Claire Custer and her husband Barney of Fultonville, NY ; and Effie Hauser of St. Johnsville, NY; a son-in-law, William Alerding of Virginia; three brothers, George Krom and his wife Claire of Wisconsin, Robert Krom and his wife Rita of Virginia, and her twin brother John Krom and his wife Nancy of Mayfield, NY; five grandchildren, Mitchell Alerding of Virginia, Thomas Bender of Maine, Marissa Glasser of Fultonville, NY, Rebecca Custer of Fultonville, NY and Ann Marie Hauser of St. Johnsville, NY; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11 o'clock at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street Fultonville, NY with the Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams presiding. Interment will follow in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown, NY. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Sunday, May 23, 2010 from 5 until 7 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to a charity of one's choice.
