Anthony J. Degutis
May 24th, 1929 - July 20th, 2008
Anthony J. Degutis 79, of Finlay Street, passed away suddenly early Sunday at his home. Born in Amsterdam on May 24, 1929, the son of the late Anthony and Anna Alexander Degutis, he was a 1948 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School. Anthony entered the US Army in 1950 and served in Korea and Japan before he was honorably discharged in 1952. He then began a thirty five year career with New York Power And Light which became Niagara Mohawk. He retired in 1988 as a foreman. Tony was a member of the Twenty Five Year Club of NiMo and also golfed on it's league. In his leisure time, he loved to work on his woodcarving. He was an avid motorcyclist and enjoyed camping, boating and travelling. He and his wife also enjoyed spending the winters at their home in Sebastian, Florida. Tony was a lifelong communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church where he served as an usher for a number of years. On May 19, 1956 he was united in marriage to the former Patricia Sufnarski. In addition to his beloved wife, he leaves his children; Judith Steven Adamchick of Amsterdam, Robert Arlene Degutis of Ann Arbor Mich., and Christopher DeAnn Degutis of Massachusetts; his eight grandchildren; Matthew, Caitlyn and Alison Adamchick, Joshua, Hannah, Martin and Nathan Degutis and Isac Yantsey; his sister; Helen Druziak of Amsterdam; nephews Mark and David Druziak and his special friends Stanley , Dolores and David Stankes and family. Services are Thursday at 8:45 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by the Funeral Mass which will be offered at 9:30 am at St. Casimir's Church, 260 East Main Street. Fr. Stanley J. Swierzowski, celebrant. Interment is in the Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery, Schuylerville. Calling hours are Wednesday from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Amsterdam Free Library in care of the funeral home office.
