James Anthony Smith II

James Anthony Smith II, passed away at his home on Saturday afternoon February 9, 2008. The long time resident of Mayfield, New York ended his 88 year journey with his devoted wife Verna Lynn Smith by his side. James Smith was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 1, 1919. He served proudly for his country in WWII, taking part in battles on the beach front at Normandy, France in 1944, and later in Italy. James went on to serve the public for 33 years as a New York City Police Officer, ultimately retiring at the rank of Sergeant. When his public service was over, James and Lynn retired to Mayfield, where they built their life together. James was an avid reader and writer. He loved crossword puzzles, poetry, nature, food, and above all, his family. James especially loved his grandchildren. There was always something to do at "Pa's" house. Everyone was welcome, no matter what. It was not uncommon for grandchildren to spend entire summers at their home, fishing in the pond or riding motorcycles around the woods. Many fond memories were made by all who stayed there. James spent his life helping his children, raise their children. James was very devoted to Lynn, for whom he wrote "If I get to heaven before you do, I'll ask St. Peter to wait at the gate for you." In addition to his wife, Verna Lynn Smith, James is survived by his 3 children, James Smith, Judith Gancasz, and Joseph Smith; 4 step-children, Carmine Pescatore, Ronnie Pescatore, Deborah Demeza and Christina Dew and a sister Margaret Kaeznaiski. James is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. James will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at Moloney's Lake Funeral Home, 132 Ronkonkoma Avenue, Lake Ronkonkoma, NY 11779. The funeral service will be celebrated from Holy Cross Church in Lake Ronkonkoma Wednesday at 9:45am. Burial will follow in Ronkonkoma Cemetery. Local arrangements have been entrusted to Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home in Gloversville.
