Donald Gibson
July 10th, 1923 - April 11th, 2007
Donald Gibson, 83, of Greenwood Ave, Amsterdam, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday April 11, 2007 at St. Mary?s Hospital in Amsterdam. Born in Altoona, PA on July 10, 1923 a son of Mr. Howard W. and Viola Patterson Gibson. He attended schools in Altoona, PA and was a graduate of Alttona High School. He went on to graduate from Penn State University. Mr. Gibson was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He served in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. He also served in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. After the War Mr. Gibson moved to Amsterdam from Pennsylvania in 1950. He was a self employed display manager. He created many of the window displays in Amsterdam retail stores, most notable the displays for the former Mortan?s Store, Gaby?s and Miller?s Family Clothing store. Donald was also an accomplished sign painter. He last was currently employed at the Amsterdam Wal-Mart in the Men?s Department. Donald was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed coaching baseball for many years in Amsterdam leagues. He married Violet Kerns Gibson on November 4, 1947. In addition to his wife of 60 years he is survived by one son, Richard Gibson of Las Vegas, Nevada. Four daughters, Donna Miller of Amsterdam, Patricia Graham Gary of Amsterdam, Janice Quinn David of Rochester, NY and Joyce Storrier Gary of Clay, NY. One brother, Harold Gibson of Buffalo, NY. Nine grandchildren, Christine, Tara, Jerrod and Jessica, Sara, Katie and Jenna, Christine and Kevin; Two great grandchildren, Paige and Grady. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Donald was predeceased by a brother Richard Gibson. Funeral services will be held on Monday April 16, 2007 at 11:00A.M. at the United Methodist Church, Golf Course Rd. Amsterdam with the Rev. Greg DeSalvatore presiding. Entombment of cremated remains will follow at 2:30P.M. Monday at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, Golf Course Rd. Amsterdam, NY 12010. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam.
