Anthony Dominick Ambesi, 84, of Clizbe Avenue, Amsterdam, passed away Tuesday morning, November 7, 2006 in the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, peacefully with his family at his side. He had been very determined and courageous throughout his sixteen-month battle with cancer. Born in Amsterdam, New York on March 11, 1922, he was the son of the late Frank and Carmella Ricci Ambesi. He was a life long resident of Amsterdam and attended local schools. He was of Roman Catholic faith. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and served in the Mediterranean and Pacific Theatres of War. He was aboard the USS Bainbridge during the African Invasion, the USS Barton during the Normandy Invasion, and the USS Shea during the Okinawa Invasion. He was employed at the Navy Depot, later known as General Services Administration, Scotia, as a firefighter and a guard. He retired in September 1979. From 1987 to 1996 he took pleasure in assisting his family in their efforts to revitalize the Sanford Stud Farm. He was an active member of the Columbian Social Club where he had many hours of enjoyment with his friends. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling, playing golf, and horse racing. He had a passion for baseball and football and a kind heart towards animals. His greatest pride was in the accomplishments and careers of his three grandchildren. He married Corinne M. Waschak on May 3, 1952. She died on January 11, 1983. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Tessiero and her husband Bart of Amsterdam; three grandchildren, Jason Tessiero of Amsterdam, Amber Tessiero of the Bronx, Kyle Tessiero of Manhattan and one great-granddaughter, Lauryn Tessiero of Amsterdam. He is also survived by two sisters, Ann Orlando Articolo and Marie Stanley Johnson both of Schenectady; one brother, Frank Ambesi, Jr. of Amsterdam and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2006 at 10:15AM at the Betz, Rossi, and Bellinger Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park A venue, Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 :15 AM at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam. Burial will take place at St. Michael's Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 4:00PM to 8:00PM at the funeral home. It is the request of his daughter that family and friends donate blood in his memory to the Amsterdam Chapter of the American Red Cross.
