Robert E. Wagner of Perth, New York, passed away Sunday, July 3rd , 2005, at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville, NY after a lengthy illness. Robert was born to Eugene and Vada Wagner on July 8th, 1914, in Groton, NY and was the eldest of six children. He became the primary caregiver of his five siblings upon the premature death of his mother. Despite his family commitments, Robert was still able to display his prowess as a semi-pro baseball player as a member of Groton?s Smith Corona All-Stars and liked to mention that he hit a triple off the great Satchel Paige. Robert?s athleticism brought him to Perth in 1938 where he worked as a skating instructor at Healy?s Roller Rink. It was in Perth where he met and married Louise Fegel on July 3rd, 1941, who predeceased him on June 5th, 2005. Robert served his country proudly during WWII and was chosen to serve as a personal aide to General Coda. Upon his return to the United States, Robert worked as a housepainter for various contractors until his retirement in 1973. Robert also continued to enjoy sports, especially bowling and fishing. He shared his love of sports with others by being instrumental in establishing the first girls? softball team as part of the Perth Youth Commission. Robert is survived by his daughters, Virginia Mee of Amsterdam, and Roberta Marrotta and her husband Robert of Ft. Johnson. Among the survivors deeply saddened by his passing are his beloved grandchildren, Emily Tesiero and her husband Aaron of Ft. Johnson, Christopher Marotta of Ft. Johnson and Serena Mee of Albany. Especially beloved in Robert?s eyes is one great-granddaughter, Sofia Tesiero of Ft. Johnson. Funeral services will private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.
