Harold E. Kavanaugh, Jr.
December 4th, 1926 - July 2nd, 2018
Harold E. "Gene" Kavanaugh, Jr; 91, died after a long illness on Monday, July 2, 2018 at the Schenectady Center Nursing Home. Born on December 4, 1926 in Glovervsille, he was the son of the late Harold and Mary Kavanagh. Harold attended St. Mary's School. From September 12, 1945 to November 14, 1946 he was a member of the Army Air Corps. On March 31, 1947 he joined the National Guard and served until 1953. His last tour of military duty was from January 1954 to May 8, 1959 in the US Marine Corps. After Harold's military experiences, he was employed by Gloversville Knitting Co. and later the Independent Leather Mill. Harold was a parishioner of the Church of the Holy Spirit. He was a Life member of the VFW and the Concordia Club and a member of the American Legion. In 1984 he married Claire Bogart who died in 2000. Besides his parents and wife, Harold was predeceased by two brothers, Michael and Thomas and his sister, Florence Wetzel. He is survived by a sister, Mary Kavanagh of Scotia; a nephew, Charles J. Dailey of Schenectady; three nieces, Sharon Riess of Las Vegas, NV, Katherine Salcido of Saugus, CA and Nancy Mayes (Michael) of Las Vegas, NV; a grandniece and grandnephew in Saugus, CA; a grandnephew in Las Vegas and a grandnephew in Hoyt, Kansas. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Wednesday, July 11 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 151 S. Main St., Gloversville, NY 12078. Immediately following the visitation a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown, with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Stratton VA Medical Center. 113 Holland Ave; Albany, NY 12208 or the charity of one's choice in memory of Harold. Arrangements have been entrusted to Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Gloversville.
