Martha Ellen Baker
September 9th, 1926 - December 29th, 2017
BAKER, Martha E. Thomas – With daughter and granddaughter Emma by her side, Marth entered into Life from her home in Beaverton, Oregon on December 29, 2017, in her 91st year. Marth was the loving wife of Donald R. Baker for 51 years, or “68” as they loved to say, and beloved mother of John (wife Barbara) and Kathryn. She was the playful, prayerful, doting and devoted grandmother of James, Jeff, Meredith, Ashley, Jenny and Emma and great-grandmother (“G.G.”) of A. J., Jack, Luke, Riley, Milo, Judah, Eddie and Abigail, Ben and Nora. She is survived by her sister Dorothy Frick of Thousand Oaks, California and predeceased by brothers, David and Robert, Sister Sue, and son James Richard Baker, “Jimmy”. Daughter of the late David Ra and Emma M Thomas. Martha was born on September 9, 1926 living childhood years in Mr. Vernon, Indiana and Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She was Educated at Goshen College, Pasadena City College and Bob Jones University where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts and Cal State Fresno where she received her master’s degree in speech pathology. Martha was a poet, professor, performer and thespian, radio personality, writer, speech therapist and missionary to the South Pacific for Nursing Home Ministries. Marth was an avid reader and gardener, who loved to travel the globe, and was content to be home, share a laugh and a cup of Turkish coffee. Her memorial service will be at the Western Seminary in Johnson Chapel, 5511 S. E. Hawthorne Boulevard, Portland, Oregon, on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 11 a.m. Donations may be made in her memory to (1) Western Seminary; (2) Multnomah College and Seminary; (3) Doernbecker Children’s Hospital in loving memory of James Richard Baker; (5) Casey Eye Institute, Portland, Oregon in remembrance of David Saunders Thomas, her beloved paternal grandfather.
