Donald A. Thompson
May 8th, 1926 - December 10th, 2023
Donald Allie Thompson, age 97, of Gloversville passed away peacefully on December 10, 2023, at the Fulton Center. Born May 8, 1926, in Fort Plain, NY, he was the son of the late Clarence M. and Pearl (Dorman) Thompson. He was married to the love of his life Muriel R. (Baker) Thompson on September 16, 1945. They were happily married 61 years until her passing on February 24, 2007. Prior to entering the Army in 1944 he was employed by J.W. Sisson Co., Inc. He then served in WWII with his date of separation June 23, 1946, as Corporal, Company C, 163rd Engineer Combat Battalion receiving the Army Occupation Medal Germany, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Medal, and the WWII Victory Ribbon. He then went back to work at J.W. Sisson where in 1964 he became one of the three owners. In 1968 he became co-owner with his best friend, Gordon Cleveland, who was like a brother to him. In 1968 he became sole owner of the company with his wife Muriel as Vice-President and Secretary. He sold the business in 1987 to retire and enjoy his family. Don enjoyed deer and rabbit hunting, snowmobiling, gardening, playing cards, and was a member of the Concordia Club and the Mohawk Coon and Cat Club. He is survived by his daughter, Donna L. Gray (Leon), Grandchildren: Murene Spraker (Mark), Donald Wagar (Kristy), Valerie Fisher (Richard), Great-Grandchildren: Marissa and Randy Spraker, Cameron and Miranda Wagar, and Loreal Fisher. Nieces: Linda Moore, Karen Parenti, Barbara Blackburn. Nephew Harold Thompson Jr. and his Companion/Significant Other, Shirley J. Nellis. In addition to his parents and wife, Donald is predeceased by his brothers Clarence J. and Harold Thompson, his sister Isabelle Walter, nieces Mary Ann Thompson, Gail Seelow, Beverly VanNatter, and nephew Clarence J. Thompson Jr. Memorial contributions may be made in Donald’s memory to the Crohn’s Colitis Foundation, Upstate Northeastern NY Chapter, 103 Patroon Dr. #10, Guilderland, NY 12084, or Lexington Center Family Services, 43 Harrison St., Gloversville, NY 12078. A funeral service will take place 12 noon on Friday, December 15th at Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Homes, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where calling hours will precede the service from 10:30 am to 12 noon.
