Herbert "Herb" Flanders Smith
December 1st, 1919 - July 11th, 2015
Herb Smith a lifelong resident of Milwaukee, passed away on July 11, 2015 at Alexian Village, Milwaukee, WI surrounded by his loving family at the age of 95. He was born on Dec. 1, 1919 in Milwaukee the son of Julius and Antoinette Schmidt. Herb graduated from Shorewood High School and proudly served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy during WWII. He married Marion (Reimer) and worked for Rockwell International until his retirement in 1981. He owned and operated Sunburst Ski Area for many years. Herb was also an instructor for skiing and snowboarding. He was a lifetime member of Zebaoth Lutheran Church in Milwaukee and a volunteer for the Milwaukee Public Museum. Herb also was a car collector. Herb will be dearly missed by his sons, Jeffrey (Kathy) Smith of Brookfield, WI and Tom (Robyn) Smith of Salt Lake City, UT; his daughter-in-law, Leslie Smith of Jackson, WI; 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marion and his son, Matthew. The visitation for Herb will be from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the 5:00 p.m. funeral service on Friday, July 17, 2015 at Grace Ev. Lutheran Church, 700 Beechwood Ave., Waukesha, WI 53186. The Rev. Jason Hacker will officiate. Interment will be on 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Valhalla Memorial Park, Milwaukee. (please meet at the cemetery). In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary Scholarship Fund, 11831 N. Seminary Dr., Mequon, WI 53092.
