In Loving Memory

Virgil Charles Smith, Jr., of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, passed away on June 15, 2024, age 84. He was born April 28, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Virgil Charles Smith, Sr., and Lucile Kline Smith. Virgil was preceded in death by sisters Frances Lloyd, O. Jeanette Ragan, and LaVon Ohmart.

Virgil is survived by four daughters — Wendy (Mike) Smith-Sharp of Ann Arbor, MI; Jackie (Paul) Fletcher of West Bloomfield, MI; Jennifer Smith of Grand Blanc, MI; and Pam Albers of Mason, OH — as well as stepdaughters Susan Barney and Laura Washburn. Proud grandpa of 13 grandchildren: George (Nina); Morgan; Megan (Caleb); Joe (Lyndsey); Kyle; Kayla; Jimmy (Jessica); Darien; Garrett; Kaitie (Brandon); McKenna; Cody; and Cami — and nine great-grandchildren: Marcus; Lexi; Mason; Jayde; Atlas; Orion; Declan; Ravyn; and Freyja.

Virgil served as Class President and graduated from Vassar High School, Vassar, Michigan, Class of 1958. Following his graduation, he began his journey into the world of garage door salesman, first at Berry Door Company before moving onto a long, successful career with Stanley Doors. Eventually, he decided he needed a change of pace, finding his way to beautiful North Carolina where, after working for several years with Overhead Doors of Greensboro, he retired.

Virgil loved socializing and meeting new people. He was active in his community, serving as a Kernersville Board of Adjustment member and HBA, and on the board of the Builders Association of Winston-Salem for multiple years. One of Virgil’s greatest joys was volunteering as chaperone on numerous youth mission trips with Sedge Garden United Methodist Church in Kernersville. He made friends wherever he went and was always generous and giving.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Virgil’s memory to the American Heart Association or the American Stroke Association would be appreciated.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date and time, to be determined.
