Jan Lynn Smith Weaver
May 11th, 1944 - June 20th, 2024
Jan Lynn Smith Weaver of West Columbia, SC died on June 20, 2024, surrounded by
family at her home after a brief illness.
Born in Atlanta, GA, on May 11, 1944, she was the daughter of Eugene Alvan and Frances Roberts Smith. Preceded in death by her husband, Dr. David Charles Weaver, she is survived by a son, Keith Weaver (Lindy) of Athens, GA, and daughters, Lauren Weaver Petroff (Allen) of West Columbia and Valerie Weaver of Columbia, as well as three grandsons, Charles and George Petroff and Mick Weaver.
Jan spent her early years in Coral Gables, FL and was a graduate of Coral Gables
High School. She held a BFA in Art Education from the University of Florida and an
MEd in Special Education Gifted and Talented from the University of Alabama.
She retired as a Gifted and Talented teacher for Tuscaloosa City Schools. Jan, a gifted multi-media artist, was a member of Tuscaloosa and University Women Painters, P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization), Daughters of the Confederacy, Tuscaloosa United Methodist Church, and recently Trinity United Methodist Church.
As a young woman, Jan planned to be an artist and teacher. She enjoyed sailing, listening to music and considered herself a tomboy. She spent her summers with her treasured cousins in Georgia. She and her husband David, a professor at the University of Alabama, lived in Tuscaloosa for many years and raised their family there. They gained life-long friends all over the world by opening their home to many international students and faculty at UA. Jan traveled extensively, and with her daughters, visited some of these friends in their home countries in later years. When Jan moved to West Columbia, SC, she enjoyed visiting the Cayce-West Columbia Library, the community at Trinity, working in her garden, spending time with her adult children and their friends, teaching and playing with her grandsons and walking her beloved dogs. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who provided support during her recent years living with dementia.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 1, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1201 Mohawk Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169 .
