Fleurette Alexis
March 16th, 1937 - July 17th, 2024
Fleurette Delsoin Alexis was born on March 16, 1937 in the southern coastal city of Les Cayes, in the Republic of Haiti. She was an only child who was cherished by her large extended family, and grew up with her cousins whom she thought of as her brothers and sisters.
She always spoke of feeling surrounded by the love of her mother and aunts who were very strong women in a matriarchal household.
Fleurette grew up in the capital city of Haiti, Port-au-Prince. She was an intelligent, creative, sociable child who grew to excel in painting, sewing, embroidery, and cooking.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Herriot Alexis, the love of her life, whom she married when she was 17 years old. Fleurette and Herriot had 6 children, Rerette, Jean, Herve, Dominique, Marnel and Jude. They had 12 grandchildren, Santiago, Sébastien, Raul, Claire, Maxim, François, Julia, Theo, Gabriel, Nathan, Christopher, and Anaïs. Two great grandchildren, Rio and Milo were recently brought into the world, and a third is on the way.
Fleurette was a phenomenal wife and mother. She was kind, gentle, nurturing, and selfless. She would bear any suffering to prevent her husband and children from suffering. As a mother, she had the uncanny ability to provide structure and discipline while nurturing and making each and every one of her children feel as though they were the center of the universe. As a spouse she was a doting wife and partner who managed the household as well and her husband’s medical practice. Fleurette created a home environment that was warm, filled with joy, elaborate meals at beautifully set dinner tables, where worldly conversations took place. It was what her children’s friends envied and what many people only dreamt of.
She instilled a strong sense of self respect and respect for others in her children. She expected hard work, high achievement and a regard for excellence. She embraced the spiritual, cultural and esoteric as much as the physical world.
On a deep level, Fleurette approached the world in a nuanced way that allowed her to coexist with virtually everyone. This quality endured until the day of her final breath.
On July 17, 2024, one of the warmest and brightest lights of our lives had moved on to take her place in heaven. Her legacy continues to shine into the future. We will miss her and are grateful for having been touched by such an extraordinary person.
A Mass will be held on Thursday, July 25th at 9:30am at Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, 5815 5th Avenue North, St. Petersburg, Florida. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Fleurette's honor to Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle.
