Steve Hughes
August 2nd, 1956 - July 22nd, 2024
“A stranger is just a friend I haven’t met yet.” Will Rogers
Steven Glen Hughes, 67, of Irmo, SC, passed away Monday, July 22, 2024, at Lexington Medical Center surrounded by his family.
Steve was born in 1956 in Columbia, SC to the late Lt. Colonel Glen Hughes and Sybil (Hayes) Hughes. He grew up as a military child, traveling through Central America and Europe with his family, but always considered Columbia his home. In 1983, he married his beautiful wife, Cheryl, and they built a life together, raising two children.
Steve worked as a locksmith at both Fort Jackson and the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center for a combined tenure of nearly forty years. He received the Achievement Medal for Civilian Service and Superior Civilian Service Award. In his earlier years, Steve was a tennis instructor for Richland County Tennis Center and was also a member of both Silver Fox and TopSpin Tennis Clubs, where he made lifelong friends. He loved his dog Rudy, watching birds with his wife, and going to the movie theater…every single week! Steve had a love for all things from computers to construction, but most importantly and with the greatest impact was his love for people. He was a devoted son and loved spending time with his parents and talking to his siblings and uncles on the phone for hours at a time. He passionately believed in supporting the people and local businesses of his town, all of whom he considered to be great friends. He was the ultimate jokester, and his presence warmed the coldest room. He will forever be missed as the greatest Son, Husband, Dad, Grandpa, and friend.
His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his beloved wife, Cheryl, of Irmo; children, Jessica Buzhardt (Josh) of Blythewood and Christopher Hughes of Irmo; grandchildren, Joseph, Sean, Ben and Lucy Buzhardt of Blythewood; mother, Sybil Hayes Hughes of Columbia; brother, Ralph Hughes (David) of Sacramento, California; and sisters, Gayle Crosby (RC) of St. Matthews and Linda Hughes (Kelly) of Orlando, Florida.
The family wants to thank Fresenius Dialysis Center of Irmo and their entire staff for helping Steve during his fight with renal failure. A very special thank you to Lexington Medical Center Surgical ICU nurses and staff who cared around the clock for him in his final days.
Services for Steve Hughes will be held Saturday, July 27, 2024, at the Mausoleum Chapel of Woodridge Memorial Park, 138 Corley Mill Rd., Lexington, SC 29072. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm at Woodridge Funeral Home, with the funeral service beginning at 2:30. Burial in Woodridge Memorial Park will follow the service.
