LABELLE - Ettie Joann Crabtree Patterson passed away in Bradenton, Florida on Saturday July 27, 2024. She was born on May 29, 1931 in Orlando Florida to George Heflin and Ruby (Windsor) Crabtree. In 1954 she married James M. “Sam” Patterson and they were married 61 years at the time of Sam’s death in 2015. She is survived by son Len (Janie) and daughter Jan (Greg) and brother Fred (Sue). She leaves behind two beloved granddaughters Jennifer (Rayko) and Haley (Chad). She was preceded in death by her sister Peggy Batcheler and brother Eugene Crabtree. Joann received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Florida and her Master’s Degree in Administration and Supervision from Florida Atlantic University. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society and was listed in the 1971 edition of Leaders of America Elementary and Secondary Educators and Volume 1, 1985 of Who’s Who and Why of Successful Florida Women. In 2018 she was awarded the Heritage Award in Hendry County by the Education Foundation. Joann was a faithful member of the Christian Church and was presently a member of Carlson Memorial United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing the piano for church, many school programs and wedding ceremonies. Joann taught First Grade for 19 years and was a school administrator for 19 years. She retired in 1993 from LaBelle Elementary School where she served as teacher, Assistant Principal and Principal. She referred to this school then and now as “Her School”. She has spent her retirement years playing golf (hole in one), reading, playing bridge and visiting the local nursing home patients. Affectionately known by many as “Aunt Jody” she will be remembered for her love of family, sense of style, pie cooking skills, generosity and her faith. She served as an inspiration to many; as a mother, grandmother, teacher, mentor and friend. Funeral services will be held Carlson Memorial Methodist Church at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2024 where visitation will be one hour before the service. Visitation for family and friends will be Monday, August 5, 2024 from 4-6 p.m. at Akin-Davis Funeral Home in LaBelle. Burial be in Fort Denaud Cemetery next to her husband James M. Patterson. Memorial donations may be made in Joann’s Memory to the Barron Library.
