Dorothy Alice Truelove Saal

April 2, 1926 - July 26, 2024

Dorothy T Saal passed away peacefully on Friday July 26 at her residence in Monterey with her daughters at her bedside. At 98 she lived a long and productive life. Together with her beloved husband EJ (Ned) Saal, they raised six daughters in Willows, California. Dorothy and Ned joined his father in farming their rice land and managing the Riz Drier that provided services for their rice and the local farming community.

Dorothy grew up in Washington, IN and graduated from Washington Catholic High School with the class of 1944. She attended Purdue University in Lafayette, IN where she was a member of the PSI Iota Xii Sorority and worked as a bookkeeper. Dorothy was recruited for War Training Program in Engineering by the Curtiss-Wright Corporation and earned her certificate, graduating as an Engineer Cadette with79 other Cadettes in March of 1945. While at Purdue, Dorothy attended the local USO, where she met her future husband Lieut. Edward J. Saal Jr. They were married in July 1946 and upon Ned's discharge from the Airforce in August, they headed west to Berkley where Ned planned to attend the University of California in the fall. Plans changed however, when they welcomed their first daughter and Ned assumed management EJ Sr's rice enterprise in Willows. There, they led a happy life adding five more daughters over the next 10 years. Dorothy was active in the local civic/social organizations such as the Children's Home Society. She shared with Ned a deep interest in the community and it's future. She supported him when he spearheaded the building of the new Willows Library, chaired the Building Committee of the Elks building and in the 1960's opened the town's Riceland Bowl (10 lane bowling alley).

Ned passed away suddenly in 1984. Dorothy remained in Willows until 2000 when she moved to the Bay Area to be closer to her daughters and grandchildren the lived there. She made her home in San Rafael for the past 17 years. With declining health, she moved to Monterey, CA in April and resided there new her eldest daughter until her passing.

Dorothy leaves behind six adoring daughter; Donna Saal Morgan, Lyn Saal Ralphs, Deborah Jane Rowland (Herbert II), Mary Jane Saal, Patricia May Watters and Christine Louise Ellis. She was the proud grandmother of seven; Eli Ralphs )Melinda), Cassandra Montell (Drew), Herbert Rowland III, McKenzie Corbett (Dakota), Sarah Saraiva (Jeffery), Katherine Watters and Bryan Ellis. She has 8 great-grandchildren ages 4-13.

Dorothy will be laid to rest with her husband Ned in a family crypt in a private ceremony on August 22 at the Mountain View Mausoleum in Oakland. Any remembrance could be made in Dorothy's name to St. Jude's.
